A Lack of Veteran Leadership for 2008 Packers?

In 2007 the Green Bay Packers were able to get all the way to the NFC Championship Game (New York Giants won) with the youngest team in the NFL. You could argue the Packer's chances of winning that NFC Championship Game was limited by not having many players on the roster who have had success in the playoffs.

With the recent retirements of QB Brett Farve and long snapper Rob Davis the Packers figure to become an even younger team in 2008. In addition to being the to oldest players on the roster both players were also the Packers last links to the 1998 Super Bowl and they were also considered to be the clubhouse leaders by the other players. While they led in different ways the Packers will miss both Farve's and Davis's leadership in 2008.

For the 2008 season the Packers need new players to step-up and be the leaders of the team, and on a young team the number of canidates are few. Of the 67 players currently on the Packers roster only 11 have five or years of NFL experience, wide receeivers Donald Driver (8) and Koren Robinson(6), tight end Donald Lee (5), offensive linemen Chad Clifton (8) and Mark Tauscher (8), linebackers Nick Barnett (5) and Tracy White (5), cornerbacks Al Harris (10) and Charles Woodson (10), defensive linemen Ryan Pickett (7) and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (8).

While general manager Ted Thompson seems to prefer finding talent through the NFL Draft, you have to wonder if he should be looking for low cost free agents to add experience to the team. As the team sits now for 2008 the Packers best hope at veteran leadership might be on the offensive and defensive lines with Clifton and Tausher and on the offensive side and Picket and KGB on the defensive line.
