Ted Thompson Pulls the Plug on Players Career - Packers Long Snapper Rob Davis Retires

According to Rob Davis, he decided to retire after Packers general manager Ted Thompson made the decision that his career with the Packers was over. Davis said "When they came to me and said, 'We're going to pull the plug on your career,' I wasted no time in saying, 'We'll I'm ready to go to work, and I would like to be considered for another position within the organization.' Davis who is 39 will stay with the organization and work as the Packers director of player development, he served as an assistant to that position last year while playing.

The Packers went to the NFC Championship Game in 2007 with the youngest team in the NFL, with the off-season retirements of Farve and Davis the Packers again figure to be the youngest team in the NFL in 2008. Last season Farve and Davis served as the Packers leaders in the clubhouse and were the only links left to the Packers last Super Bowl team in 1998.

NFL Executive of the Year Ted Thompson "pulled the plug" on Davis's playing career, Thompson now must address in the off-season who will provide veteran leadership to a young team in 2008. Will current players like Donald Driver and Kabeer Gvaja-Biamila step into that role or will Thompson look to find some veteran free agents, preferably with experience in the playoffs.
